    Advances in Evaluation and Mitigation of Geohazards related to Unstable Slopes

    Inorder to meet booming energy demands during rapidsocio-economic development, dams and reservoirs have been recentlybuiltthroughouttheworld. For example, more than 14,000dams were constructed in China between1973 and2008. Reservoir impoundment and subsequent operations have created newgeohazards or destabilized ancient ones, particularly in hydro-fluctuationzones, and have triggered notable catastrophes such as the Vajont landslide andQianjiangping landslide.

    Three Gorges Reservoir is one of the mostsignificant hydraulic engineering projects inthe worldbecause of its huge physicalsize and installed hydropower capacity. More than 4,000 geohazards have been identifiedintheTGR area including landslides, debris flows, collapsed reservoir banks,etc., causingseriousthreats to people and property.Decades of research have been dedicated tothestudy of geohazards in reservoir regions. The combined effects of rainfalland variations of reservoir water levels on geohazards can be a multiscaleprocess, and many new theoretical, numerical, experimental, and stabilizationmethods have been developed to study, forecast,and mitigate the associated geohazards.

    This Special Issueprovides a forum for researchers to present and discuss state of art theoriesand methods for the evaluation and mitigation of geohazards related to unstableslopes, includinglandslides, landslide dams, tunnels, dams and reservoirs from amulti-disciplinary perspective. Papers on topics related to the theme, “Advances in Evaluation andMitigation of Geohazards related to Unstable Slopes”, such as those in thenon-inclusive list below, are welcome.

    ·          Hydrological andhydrogeological processes in reservoir regions

    ·          Water-induced deteriorationof rock and soil masses

    ·          Evolution mechanism ofgeohazards

    ·          Advanced monitoring andearly warning methods ofgeohazards

    ·          Unstable slopes due toconstruction and mining

    ·          Mitigation and controlof geohazards

    ·          Big data and artificialintelligence techniques in geohazards.

    Journal of Earth Science (ISSN 1674-487X, Online ISSN1867-111X) is issued bimonthly through China University of Geosciences, andpublished by Springer. The bimonthly English journal strives to cover allbranches of geology and related technology in the exploration and utilizationof earth resources, namely, geology, petrology, mineralogy, ore depositgeology, tectonics, paleontology, stratigraphy, sedimentology, geochemistry,geophysics, environmental sciences, etc. Submissions of original articles inEnglish from scientists both in China and around the World on relevant subjectsare welcome. All articles are reviewed by two or more referees for scholarlypresentation, technical merit, quality of scientific content, and utility ofthe results for practicing geologists. The Editorial Committee reserves thefinal decision concerning the acceptance of a paper.

    Articles should discuss new theories, methods anddiscoveries, recent achievements in the geosciences, as well as timely reviewson selected subjects. Articles should contain original data and facts whichsupport the conclusions. Manuscripts should conform to the guidelines in theinstructions for authors.
